@UConn Take Back the night — starting tonight, 4/22/2009

The University of Connecticut’s Women’s Center would like to cordially invite you to attend the upcoming event Take Back the Night!

Take Back the Night is an annual international event, dedicated to raising awareness about sexual assault against women. The goal of Take Back the Night is to foster a supportive and safe environment for survivors and survivors of assault.

Schedule of events for Wednesday, April 22

  • Rally : 7pm in the Student Union Ballroom
  • Candlelight march around campus at 8pm
  • Speak Out for survivors of violence begins at 9pm after the march, back in the Student Union Ballroom. The Speak Out encourages the survivors in attendance to come forward to tell their stories and listen to others tell theirs. Trained counselors will be present to support any survivor or ally at any point in time during the program.
  • Coffeehouse at 10pm after the Speak Out with music, food, and conversation for anyone who wishes to attend.

Continuing the work:

Also, for anyone interested in volunteering to table or talk to people around campus, there are lots of opportunities in the upcoming week.  We will be tabling 11-2 on Friday in the SU on Union Street, 10:00 -1:30 on Monday in the same place, and 12-2 Wednesday on the green between the SU and the Benton. But we’ll need people just walking around Wednesday talking to folks and letting them know too.   Just stop by the table or the Women’s Center, and we’ll get you set up with what you need.

There are more opportunities available if anyone would like to stop by the Womens Center at any point over the coming days to make more flyers, posters and ribbons. There are also posters that can just be picked up and hung around campus.

Thanks and we hope to see you there!

Best Regards,

The Peer Educators of the Violence Against Women Prevention Program (VAWPP)
